Will Methimazole cream allow my cat's appetite to return? And is rapid breathing a side effect?

My cat was on Methimazole tablets for two doses and was in the worst shape ever. He wouldn't eat, drink, his breathing was labored, and he was depressed and hiding. The vet switched him to the cream because he hasn't been eating. After a break from meds he began to taste food now but not really eating and his mood is better. He had his first dose of the cream today and is still not eating and his breathing is still labored but not as much as before. It seems that once he went on meds he rapidly became worse. Beforehand, he was losing too much weight, but he ate moderately, and his mood and energy were good. Is this med a good idea? I'm worried about his not eating, his mood, and his breathing. Has anyone else experienced this with their cat? Will Methimazole cream allow my cat's appetite to return? And is rapid breathing a side effect?
Methimazole is prescribed for hyperthyroidism. I'm assuming your vet checked your cat's thyroid function and diagnosed this. Cats who are hyperthyroid can also have possible heart problems, kidney problems, and high blood pressure. The oral tablets can cause loss of appetite and vomiting. You need to tell your vet what's going on so they can decide what the best treatment is, as there are other methods of treating this illness. Will Methimazole cream allow my cat's appetite to return? Was your cat diagnosed. hyper thyroid? that is what the med is for.

I do not know if the heavy breathing is related so a vet check for that is in order.

For hyper T, the most successful 1x treatment is the radio iodine treatments. cats do not become hypo thyroid so once that is done your cat would be fine. A big outlay of money but cheaper in the long run

Try warming up some canned food. try tuna, plain chicken broth, chicken, turkey, deli meat, meat baby food with no onions, yogurt.

Best of luck
